Many radioactive biological samples measured by liquid scintillation counting techniques are not readily soluble in the commonly used solvents of liquid scintillation cocktails. Special solubilizers are required to obtain a homogeneous system for reproducible measurement of the radioactive sample.

Filter counting, or solid support counting as it is sometimes known, is probably best described as heterogeneous counting. The main difference between heterogeneous counting and homogeneous countingis that heterogeneous counting relies on 2 p geometry while 4 p geometry applies to homogeneous counting. Sample Preparation of Sheep Plasma for Liquid Scintillation Counting

A researcher had been using PerkinElmer’s Biological Sample Preparation Guide in an attempt to process sheep plasma samples. The samples were labeled with 3H and 14C. The current procedure called for 0.1 mL or 0.2 mL of plasma with 0.5 mL of deionised (DI) water in 15 mL of ULTIMAGold™. After several hours, the samples would turn cloudy and separate. The researcher requested our help to refine her sample preparation technique or recommend conversion to an alternate cocktail.
