Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) is a neurotrophin that acts within the central and peripheral nervous systems. BDNF is expressed in a pro-form as pro-BDNF then later cleaved by plasmin, furin, or pro-convertase enzymes to become the mature form of BDNF. Released BDNF has been observed to bind to both TrkB and LNGFR (p75) receptors. Acting on these receptors, BDNF helps to support the differentiation of new neurons and synapses, promote neuron growth, and generally promote the survival of existing neurons. BDNF has been observed to potentially play a role in several major diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and Huntington ’s disease. This kit has been designed for the detection and quantification of BDNF in serum, and cell culture supernatants.

AlphaLISA technology allows the detection of molecules of interest in a no-wash, highly sensitive, quantitative assay. In an AlphaLISA assay, a biotinylated anti-analyte antibody binds to the Streptavidin-coated Donor beads while another anti-analyte antibody is conjugated to AlphaLISA Acceptor beads. In the presence of the analyte, the beads come into close proximity. The excitation of the Donor beads causes the release of singlet oxygen molecules that triggers a cascade of energy transfer in the Acceptor beads, resulting in a sharp peak of light emission at 615 nm.
